Like many countries and states, British Columbia had only funded one Cochlear Implant for children. In 2008 the Lund family were refused a second Cochlear Implant by the British Columbia health system. Undeterred they funded the second implant and went to Texas to have the operation done. This news item tells their story.
Interestingly at that time, three of the other Canadian provinces did fund bilateral Cochlear Implants for children. They had recognised the language, developmental and social benefits of bilateral Cochlear Implants.
As of 2011, all Canadian provinces provide bilateral Cochlear Implants.
